Coast Guard called off the search for a swimmer missing off Newport Beach
Newport Beach, California – The search for a man who was last seen swimming in the water off Newport Beach on Saturday afternoon was called off temporarily, according to the authorities who were in charge of the search.
Newport Beach police were alerted and launched a search after the man, whose name was withheld and was only said to be 48 years old, failed to show up at a meeting scheduled with his friend on Saturday.
He was last seen swimming alone in Corona del Mar and was wearing blue biker shorts.
According to Newport Beach Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Ure, at least one ship and a helicopter were searching the area on Sunday surrounding the last known location of the missing person.
The United States Coast Guard has announced it will suspend the search on Sunday evening after spending 27 hours conducting 12 search patterns that covered 152 square miles.
