Motorcycle crash claimed the life of an off-duty Whittier police officer
Whittier, California – An off-duty officer with the Whittier Police Department was killed in a motorcycle accident that took place on Saturday near Lynwood.
Crews were sent to Martin Luther King Boulevard and Beechwood Avenue after receiving a report of a crash at approximately 3:32 p.m. The report said a man was lying on the ground while the motorcycle was caught in flames.
It was later determined by responding crews that the man involved in the crash was Officer Whitfield from the Whittier Police Department. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Information about whether the off-duty officer crashed into another vehicle was not released.
The authorities announced the loss of their colleague and expressed condolences to Whitfield’s family through social media.

“It is with great sadness that our department mourns the passing of Officer Lanell Whitfield, who was involved in an off-duty traffic collision earlier today in the city of Lynwood,” the Whittier Police Department said in a Facebook post.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
