Traffic stop followed by a foot pursuit resulted in the driver’s death after a San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department deputy opened fire
Adelanto, California – The California Department of Justice is looking into an incident where a deputy from the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department opened fire on an unarmed person after conducting a traffic stop, resulting in his death, according to authorities.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a press release that the incident happened around 2:41 a.m. near Highway 395 and Cactus Road, when a traffic stop was followed by a foot chase.
The circumstances that led to the foot pursuit and shooting were not made public, as was the name of the deputy involved.
Authorities did not provide any information about the dead motorist other than to say he was killed in a “lethal force encounter,” but Attorney General Rob Bonta’s office subsequently confirmed that it was a shooting.
The identity of the driver, their age, and gender have not been made public.
According to the findings of the investigation so far, the driver of the vehicle was not in possession of a weapon at the time of the incident.
