Long Beach man taken into custody in connection to a shooting incident in 2020

Long Beach, California – Authorities have taken a Long Beach man into custody on two warrants stemming from a gunshot incident in Central Long Beach last year, one for attempted murder and the other for a possible hit-and-run.

The 32-year-old, Lavone Lamar King, was arrested between Pacific Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway in West Long Beach on Sunday night after an investigation linked him to a shooting on Sept. 11, 2020, when investigators discovered “a large crime scene with no victims,” according to police.

Last year, a gunshot occurred in the 1700 block of E. 17th St., near Long Beach City College’s Pacific Coast Campus, according to police. Bullet casings, three handguns, and many unoccupied automobiles damaged by gunshots were discovered, but no suspects.

According to LBPD spokesman Allison Gallagher, in his attempt to flee the crime scene, King smashed into a parked car and left the area on foot, resulting in the hit and run warrant. The LBPD defines gang-related crime as any act done “for the benefit of, at the direction of, or in connection with any criminal street gang,” according to police. There was no additional information about a motive available right away.

LBPD officers arrested King just after midnight on Monday, Dec. 20, and took him to the Men’s Central Jail, where he was being held on a bond of just over $2 million.
