Long Beach man arrested after attacking from behind and stabbing to death an elderly female neighbor who was collecting recyclables

Long Beach, California – According to the Long Beach Police Department, a 31-year-old neighbor was arrested after a stabbing incident in Long Beach on Saturday morning that killed an elderly woman.

Officers were sent to the 2900 block of Coolidge Street after receiving a report of a stabbing at around 6:18 a.m.

Responding officers found the 79-year-old woman with stab wounds in her upper body. Long Beach Fire Department crews pronounced the woman dead. She was identified as Paz Veliz.

Police were informed by witnesses that the suspect fled in the direction of the 91 Freeway near Paramount Avenue following the incident.

According to police, officers were able to locate the suspect and attempted to take him into custody. But the suspect did not follow their orders, so officers were forced to use force in order to arrest him, according to police.

Police identified the suspect as a 31-year-old Long Beach resident, Kevin Ngo.

The initial investigation showed Ngo attacked Veliz from behind and stabbed her while she was collecting recyclables in the alleyway.

Ngo has been booked into the Long Beach City Jail and is being held in lieu of $2 million bail. Police are still investigating what happened. Jail records do not indicate when he is due to appear in court.
