“Because I’m a person of color, the system isn’t for me,” Black female business owner claims she was racially harassed by a White male customer in an incident that was caught on camera
Preliminary data from more than three dozen U.S. PDs indicate a double-digit spike in hate crimes last year, a trend that continues this year too. On average, bias-motivated incidents in 37 major U.S. cities increased by nearly 39%, with the 10 largest metropolitan areas reporting a record increase of 54.5%, according to an analysis of national police data compiled by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at CSU.
A White male customer allegedly racially harassed Black female business owner and refused to leave the business for more than 30 minutes, at least that’s what the Black woman, the victim in the incident, claims in a recently uploaded videos on TikTok and Twitter. This incident is yet another proof that racism incidents are on the rise lately and measures should be taken as soon as possible.
According to ABS that reported about this case few days ago, the incident happened on May 29 at a Tx. based spa center. Part of the incident was caught on camera, and later uploaded by the Black woman who is also the owner of the business, clearly showing the customer refusing to leave the spa center and repeatedly harassing her.
In the footage that she posted on Twitter in four parts, the man allegedly mocked Jehovah’s Witnesses and said her “race” and “class” ruined his and his family’s lives. The more she asked him to leave, the more he laughed and made her and others around feel uncomfortable. The woman, who wanted to remain unidentified, further claims that she called 911, but the law enforcement never responded to her call.
In the first video, the Black woman is heard loud and clear asking the male customer to leave the premises, but the customer told her to call the cops. “I need you to leave. I need you to leave right now,” she continued saying. “Get out of my establishment now.”
The Black business owner explained in the video that the customer had scheduled an appointment and paid in advance, but as soon as he got into the spa center, he started roaming around, looking into rooms and making her employees and other customers feel uncomfortable. That’s why the Black woman gave him a full refund and politely asked him to leave the establishment several times.
“I need you to get out of my establishment, for real, because you’re ruining the vibe,” the woman continued and the customer is seen taunting her since the police have not responded to her call. But everything changed when the woman threatened him with trespassing.
“You’re trespassing. I asked you to leave. I gave your refund. I want you to go,” she said.
“Your race and your class destroyed my family and my life,” the man responded. “You ruined my life, my entire legacy of being a Christian,” he continued. “And now you are playing an energy chess game with someone that has nothing to do with your class,” he continued. “Maybe you could’ve asked me if I wanted to be a rapper or gangster,” he added.
More than half an hour later, the man finally left the spa center.
The videos uploaded by the Black woman now have millions of views and several of her followers confirmed that the man in the video is well-known offender as he has a history of doing this to other businesses. Two days after the incident, he was identified by the online users as Levi Briggs.
“Because I’m a person of color, the system isn’t for me,” the Black woman told the Daily Beast days after the incident. “It’s for others.”
